Islands of Guanabara Bay. A historical tour of some of the 500 forgotten islands in Rio de Janeiro's bay. There have quite a few changes, mostly in the last 100 years in the form of landfills. At one time the islands of Guanabara Bay were little tropical paradises, each one more idyllic than the next. This page also has a few lines about the "Island of Brazil" theory and the lost lake of Xarapes.

Asylum - Fleeing to Brazil.
Crime. This is the one essay I didn't want to write, but I must. Brazil has a crime problem. Don't worry, though, it is not everybody and it will probably not affect you, even if you visit there. The fact is that crime is basically a middle class and poor people problem. As far as I'm concerned, the politicians, the Brazilian judiciary, the legal profession and the so-called "human rights" community have innocent blood on their hands - lots of it.

The Japanese in Brazil. So I get this letter: My new girlfriend here in Florida, is from Sao Paulo and is of Brazilian and Japanese descent. I want to impress her with some knowledge about her origins, but I can't find anything in your history of how and when Japanese involvement came to Brazil. Can you help w/info? Well, I can. And since I'm writing about the Jews, I might as well do ther Japanese, too. This is for Gloria, Keiko and Yaeko.

Big Words And we are not talking "Anticonstitucionalisimamente". Actually a "big word" in Brazil (called a palavrao) is nothing but foul language. This is a page about different degrees of obscenity in Brazil. I don't use this type of language, in either Portuguese or English, but it is common and I will reluctantly give it a try.

The Image of BrazilThe initial reason from this page is a stupid movie called Turistas. Actually, this is about how Brazil is perceived abroad. Bananas, crime, naked women, burning forests, Corcovado, coffee, soccer, football, samba, beautiful beaches, dead indians, more crime, Pele, Sugarloaf, and so on - take your pick. All of these are common images of Brazil in both North America and around the world. What is the real Brazil? Do the images and stories in the media about Brazil reflect reality? Is Brazil good or bad, fun or scary, rich or poor, beautiful or ugly? Those are really hard questions!
