OLD MAPS of SIERRA ESTRELLAS and MARICOPA
I have a pretty good collection of old charts gathered from books, diaries and atlases (all photocopies!!). These show how explorers saw the Maricopa and Sierra Estrella region, from 1600s to early 1900s. BIG mistakes were made.
For easy identification of locations, I have traced rivers routes in blue and added yellow shading to the location of Estrella Mountains on the charts.
In some maps I have added labels to identify relevant places, as follows:
1. Estrella Mountains, southern point; 2. Maricopa Wells area, or Cocomaricopa village on same spot; 3. Maricopa village at Pima Butte; 4. Main Pima village at Sacaton; 5a. Gila River, upper part to Salt River; 5b. Gila River, lower part, from Salt to Colorado; 6. Santa Cruz River; 7. Salt River; 8. Verde River; 9. Casa Grande Ruins, 10 Tucson and San Xavier. Also the location of downtown Phoenix is marked with a P. Other points of interest may be marked individually on each map.
The charts are divided into four groups, by period:
