Nazis in Brazil

Did I rub elbows with the infamous "Angel of Death"? Did I see Joseph Menegele standing in front of his house? Did I pass by him at a hospital? Was this mass murderer the little old man at the table next to me in the German Restaurant?

Like so many others I was astonished when the news of Joself Menegele's strange death was make public in the early 1990s (?). Soon reporters were following the steps of this war ceriminal as he fled from Germany to Italiy to Argentina and from there to Paraguay and finally to Brazil. As more news appeared on TV, the names and places became very familar and close to home: Sao Paulo, Santo Amaro, Bertioga, Diadema, Hospital Santa Marta, etc... And then the TV shows the house Menegele lived in in the district of Diadema in the southern part of Sao Paulo, and there was a blue and white "Mar Paulista" bus passing in front of the house - I have ridden those buses many a time! It was a very wierd sensation.

The fact is that I certainly had driven by in front of the old monster's house. I may have even seen the "angel of Feath" himself. My wife lived in a place Chacara Santo Antonio in Campo Grande, in the general area of Santo Amaro in the Southern Zone of Sao Paulo. She went to church at the Igreja Batista de Represa Nova (Pastor Edgar Martins) and had many friends in the Pedreira region. This was right next to Diadema, near the Billings Resouvour and the end of the Pinheiros River. Not exactly a luxurious high rent district, believe me. When going down to the beach at Santos, or to the ABC region (meaning the industrial cities of Santo Andre, Sao Bernardo and Sao Caetano) we would often take the short cut through Diadema along the Estrada de Alvarenga. This was the road on which Menegele lived.

A história do exílio secreto do médico alemão foi descoberta apenas em 1985, quando um teste de ADN comprovou que os restos mortais encontrados pela Polícia brasileira eram mesmo de Josef Mengele. BLA BLA BLA This list is based on my perception, considering only two factors: popularity and influence. I would like to be able to consider technical merit, but the sad truth is that I don't have what it takes.

It was little more than a shack, a yellow stucco bungalow with one gloomy bedroom, an antiquated bathroom and a tiny kitchen. It was in one of the poorer parts of town, at 5555 Alvarenga Rd. in the Eldorado suburb of Sao Paulo. It was only a few miles from the Bosserts, the only people he could depend upon for regular visits and support.

It was precisely these anomalies that alerted one already suspicious person to the fact that "Don Pedro" was hiding a murky past. As young Norberto Glawe accompanied "Don Pedro" to the Santa Marta Hospital on May 17, 1976, he noticed that he was using the identity card of Wolfgang Gerhard, the "unbalanced" Nazi who had introduced them earlier that year. He also noticed that "Don Pedro" had paid his hospital admission fee with a crisp $100 bill.

Argentina in 1949 ... Mengele's decision to make a permanent move to Paraguay clearly dismayed his wife, Martha, who argued that he would still be safe in Buenos Aires. But Mengele had no intention of returning there because Israeli agents had kidnapped in Buenos Aires in May, 1960, the notorious Adolf Eichmann, the SS officer responsible for the deaths of nearly six million people. President Stroessner he man who gave Mengele his lifeline to Brazil was a 36-year-old Nazi and former Hitler Youth chief in Austria, Wolfgang Gerhard. He had arrived in Brazil in 1948, leaving Europe because he could no longer tolerate "the oppressive Allied occupation," even though he disliked Brazil because it was filled with "half-monkeys, people of a sick and secondary race." The "new," confident Mengele had also become a man of property. He now owned a $7,000 apartment in a high-rise building in the center of Sao Paulo, which he rented out. As he tried to develop some financial independence, a further boost to Mengele's confidence came in 1971 when he inherited a priceless Brazilian identity card. It belonged to Wolfgang Gerhard. Brooklin earned its name when the city of São Paulo bought a batch of mothballed trolley cars from the city of New York. Embossed on the car that took the tracks to a then-distant district on the outskirts of town was the name of the borough it once served: Brooklyn. German immigrants congregated in the Brooklin neighborhood. It maintains a high concentration of German restaurants and organizes an annual Oktoberfest. The notorious Nazi “Angel of Death” Josef Mengele allegedly hung out with friends in the neighborhood. For more on Brooklin, he finally accepted an invitation from the Bosserts to stay at their rented beach house at Bertioga, 25 miles south of Sao Paulo. It was the height of a sweltering Brazilian summer. Alone, he took the two-hour bus ride to Bertioga, arriving there on Feb. 5, 1979.
