Os documentos revelam ainda que, para manter segredo da sua verdadeira identidade, o médico alemão evitava viajar pelo Brasil, o que o obrigou a passar os últimos anos da sua vida deprimido e solitário. Chefe do serviço médico do campo de concentração de Auschwitz (Polónia), entre 1943 e 1945, Mengele usou prisioneiros judeus como cobaias em experiências para comprovar a suposta superioridade da raça ariana. As suas práticas cruéis levaram à morte cerca de 400 mil judeus e o médico nazi passou a ser conhecido como "anjo da morte". Josef Mengele tornou-se um foragido em Maio de 1945, quando a Alemanha assinou a rendição. O médico viveu secretamente, por quatro anos, como um camponês, na região da Baviera, mudando para a Argentina em 1949 e, depois de dez anos, foi para o Paraguai. Depois de ser descoberto pelo governo alemão, Mengele fugiu para o Brasil, usando documentos falsos. O médico nazi (1911-1979) viveu os últimos 19 anos da sua vida no Brasil, com identidade falsa, em regiões próximas da cidade de São Paulo. He also noticed that "Don Pedro" had paid his hospital admission fee with a crisp $100 bill. Argentina in 1949 ... Mengele's decision to make a permanent move to Paraguay clearly dismayed his wife, Martha, who argued that he would still be safe in Buenos Aires. But Mengele had no intention of returning there because Israeli agents had kidnapped in Buenos Aires in May, 1960, the notorious Adolf Eichmann, the SS officer responsible for the deaths of nearly six million people. President Stroessner he man who gave Mengele his lifeline to Brazil was a 36-year-old Nazi and former Hitler Youth chief in Austria, Wolfgang Gerhard. He had arrived in Brazil in 1948, leaving Europe because he could no longer tolerate "the oppressive Allied occupation," even though he disliked Brazil because it was filled with "half-monkeys, people of a sick and secondary race." The "new," confident Mengele had also become a man of property. He now owned a $7,000 apartment in a high-rise building in the center of Sao Paulo, which he rented out. As he tried to develop some financial independence, a further boost to Mengele's confidence came in 1971 when he inherited a priceless Brazilian identity card. It belonged to Wolfgang Gerhard. Brooklin earned its name when the city of São Paulo bought a batch of mothballed trolley cars from the city of New York. Embossed on the car that took the tracks to a then-distant district on the outskirts of town was the name of the borough it once served: Brooklyn. German immigrants congregated in the Brooklin neighborhood. It maintains a high concentration of German restaurants and organizes an annual Oktoberfest. The notorious Nazi “Angel of Death” Josef Mengele allegedly hung out with friends in the neighborhood. For more on Brooklin, he finally accepted an invitation from the Bosserts to stay at their rented beach house at Bertioga, 25 miles south of Sao Paulo. It was the height of a sweltering Brazilian summer. Alone, he took the two-hour bus ride to Bertioga, arriving there on Feb. 5, 1979. Now here a line of observations about the subject, in italic.
