Jean Manzon was born in Paris in 1915, he began his career as a photographic journalist on the newspaper Paris Soir and then joined the team of journalists who set up Paris Match, the large circulation French weekly. During the Second World War he joined the French Navy, where he was noted for his courage as a journalist. At the end of the war, he met the Brazilian film maker Alberto Cavalcanti in London and, through his influence, he decided to settle in Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro he developed an intense professional career with the illustrated magazines of DiaĦrios Associados, particularly in O Cruzeiro, revolutionizing photographic reportage in the country. In 1952 he founded his famous cinematographic company, in which he produced around 900 documentaries, mostly about the people, culture and cities of Brazil. He also worked as a photographer for the magazine Paris Match, which he directed from 1968 to 1972. He died in Sao Paulo in 1990.
